John Galliano says goodbye to Maison Margiela
It’s time to say goodbye. Yes, another fashion partnership comes to an end. Were we caught by surprise? I’d say not entirely. After all, there were already rumours swirling, and let’s not forget that 2024 has been a year of many departures—or should we call it the famous game of musical chairs among the major fashion maisons?
John Galliano took to his social media in mid-December to share an enigmatic message, stating: “Rumours… everyone wants to know, and everyone wants to dream…” He further added: “When the time is right, I’ll share my plans for the future. For now, I express my immense gratitude, continue reflecting on my flaws, and never stop dreaming.”
Galliano joined Maison Margiela as Creative Director in 2014, following a period of seclusion after his controversial departure from Dior due to serious accusations. For those who wish to dive deeper into his story, we highly recommend his documentary “High Low - John Galliano” on Prime Video—it’s unmissable!
JOHN GALLIANO X MAISON MARGIELA
Looking back at his tenure at Maison Margiela, Galliano undeniably made history. He quickly elevated the brand to a whole new level, reviving a maison that seemed dormant. The OTB Group, which owns the brand, saw its sales figures soar year after year, a direct result of Galliano’s unparalleled talent and the media impact of having such a celebrated name at the helm.
THE MAISON’S CODES
Galliano faced the monumental challenge of creating a new DNA for the brand—something he does like no other! In 2015, he presented his first collection, working closely with Martin Margiela, the maison’s founder. Together, they delved deeply into the brand’s existing codes. Galliano was given complete creative freedom to reinterpret and redefine the “new era” of Maison Margiela.
The designer accomplished this mission flawlessly. Not only did he elevate the maison’s existing codes, but he also developed innovative techniques and proposed fresh ideas, cementing his genius.
A STAR BORN TO SHINE
This phrase could perfectly sum up Galliano’s talent, yet it still falls short of capturing his boundless brilliance. His talent transcends definitions.
His theatrical runway shows are a testament to this, creating characters that tell stories rather than simply showcasing new garments. Even for those who don’t love fashion, Galliano’s creations are undeniably impactful.
FROM BALZAC TO VICTOR HUGO
Galliano’s final show for Maison Margiela was a true masterpiece, befitting the artist he is. Held on Paris’s Alexandre III Bridge, the show merged the worlds of Balzac and Victor Hugo, making it one of the most impactful fashion presentations of the past decade.
Who wasn’t captivated by the collaboration between Galliano and legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath? The porcelain-effect skin looks went viral on social media, adding another layer of theatricality to this farewell show—a grand homage to a 10-year partnership.
In an open letter, Galliano expressed his gratitude for this chapter:
“Today is the day I say goodbye to Maison Margiela,” Galliano wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “The greatest, most precious gift he (Rosso) gave me was the opportunity to once again find my creative voice when I had become voiceless.”
WHAT’S NEXT?
The future of Maison Margiela’s creative direction remains unknown, as does Galliano’s next move. But one thing is certain: wherever he goes next, he’s destined to shine.
